Meet Keila Gonzales (@kg.ny) , a beautiful and talented Graphic Designer, based in NY.
"All of my work is female empowerment based. I like to work with female owned businesses and any personal illustrations or work that I do always represents some sort of girl power motivation. " Is what motivates her work.
- Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do? My name is Keila Gonzalez and I am a Latina graphic designer born and raised in The Bronx but currently living in Brooklyn. - When did your journey start? I have always been a creative person since birth, so I like to say my journey has started since I was born but my graphic design journey started about 2 years ago when my best friend really wanted a snapchat filter made for her birthday. I did all the research I could and watched every youtube video and created my first snapchat filter for her, soon other people were asking me to create snapchat filters for their birthdays and my love for design started to evolve and grow from there. - What’s the idea behind your work? All of my work is female empowerment based. I like to work with female owned businesses and any personal illustrations or work that I do always represents some sort of girl power motivation.
- Do you have a personal life motto? "Everything is going to be okay" I know it's super simple but I constantly tell myself this because I have been through things in my past where I truly thought there is no way that I am going to survive this or get through this and then here I am surviving and through it. So whenever I am going through something in my life I remind myself that things will be okay. - What kind of music drives you? I am ashamed to say I am a horrible music person and what I mean is that I usually just listen to whatever is out at the moment and what's popular but definitely hip hop and spanish music drives me. - Do you have any favourite film and why? I LOVE movies so this one is hard but I have two, Beauty and the beast and American Beauty. I love them both for different reasons, beauty and the beast is my childhood favorite and I love it more as I get older because I love how smart and kind they made Belle to be and I love the concept of loving someone despite their appearances. American Beauty I love because of Kevin Spacey, Hands down one of the most talented actors ever. - What’s your favourite piece that you’ve created? My favorite piece that I have ever created has to be this piece that was for the recent election and I created a female with Polaroid's stuck on her face and the Polaroid's all represented the fact that so many women and diversity was elected into congress. I think it was such a strong piece with a strong message! - How do you find inspiration on an average day? Do you have any rituals? Pintrest is usually my go to for inspiration! I am always on it but aside from pintrest I love to go to museums a lot and I also love getting inspired by my city. New York City is inspiration within itself and I always find inspiration whenever I leave my building. - Who’s your favourite contemporary artist? Currently my favorite contemporary artist is Yayoi Kusama because she's just so dope and her art has so much color and its so whimsical and fun. Plus for her age she dresses so bad ass. - How do you advertise yourself as an artist? I currently don't do much for advertising myself as an artist, my biggest tool has been social media but my other tool is honestly my personality. I go to a lot of networking events and I make myself known. I make sure to speak to everyone, I exchange instagrams and business cards but I definitely network till I drop when I am out. - How did social media help you to promote your art? Social media has helped tremendously with promoting my art. I mainly use instagram and it truly is the best tool to promote yourself for free. I utilize hashtags and I am always engaging with my followers. I gain a lot of new clients through instagram and I also get so much support from other women on instagram which promotes me and my art. - Do you have any advice to give to the new female entrepreneurs? Don't Give up! I think the sound of being an entrepreneur is cool but it's a lot of hard work, uncertainty and dedication but I believe if you keep on and don't give up the universe will see that and will make it your time but just keep focused on your goal and don't stop till you're there and then create bigger goals after that.
