7 Best London Coffee Shops To Work From If You Are A Freelancer

Updated: Sep 25, 2019

One of London’s most beautiful sideshows is the presence of some truly quirky, cosy, hipstery and quite stylish, independent coffee shops. They often offer the best selection of brews coming from all over the world, served with incredible latte art (make sure you take a picture of it and upload it on your Instagram) made by attractive baristas often wearing 90’s style clothing. You know what I’m talking about, right?

Here comes the freelancer, with his little Apple laptop (some of them with stickers on), desperately looking for the perfect place to crash in for a couple of hours. However, not every coffee shop is the right coffee shop to get that big project (or at least half of it) done by the end of the day.

What are the requirements for a coffee shop to be the perfect place to get your work done, or perhaps arrange your business meetings?

Quietness with a soundtrack (Good music at the right volume, is a must for productivity. Check out our article about Concentration Music For Work).

Comfortable seats (no wooden benches please).

High speed Wi-Fi and plug sockets (please don’t drop when I’m about to set my Facebook Campaign live).

Good food at reasonable prices (there’s only so much avo and eggs I can eat in a week).

One of our Office of the Day series goals (follow our IG @weareeffe to find out), is to show you (after multiple tests) which of the following places ticks all the boxes, so you can’t go wrong:

1. Husk Coffee and Creative space E14 7LW

This creative space near Limehouse station is a great place to inspire your creativity (they also have a dedicated space for art exhibitions) and get your work done without worrying about finding a good seat (big space).

Quietness - Yes! Nice quiet vibe, good music.

Comfortable seats - Definitely! The place is quite big and has a wide variety of seats, such as sofas, armchairs, small and large tables.

High speed Wi-Fi and plug sockets - Yes

Food - The best so far. You should try their fantastic stews and soups and amazing desserts (GF and Vegan available too)

2. Six Degrees Collective N1 8ED

We just recently discovered this gem in the heart of the picturesque Camden Passage, just two minutes walk from Angel station, and we absolutely fell in love with it (In fact I’m sitting by their window, sipping their coffee right now) They offer a great selection of coffees and cakes, surrounded by clean and beautiful decor.

Quietness - Yes. Very relaxed and quiet atmosphere, great Indie Rock playlist

Comfortable seats - Absolutely! Stunning velvet sofas by a big window facing the street, large and small tables with comfy chairs.

High speed Wi-Fi and plug sockets - Yes!

Food and drinks- Good selection of breakfasts (served until lunch time), yummy toasties and stews, top cakes and coffee.

3. Barber and Parlour E2 7DP

Fancy a walk around the artsy streets of Shoreditch? Then you should definitely stop at Barber and Parlour for a good coffee and lunch. You can even do a little furniture and decoration shopping from their showroom inspired or used by Soho House, and if you’re waiting for a date afterwards, you can pop to the Electric Cinema downstairs.

Quietness - Yes. Very relaxed and quiet atmosphere, great Indie Rock playlist

Comfortable seats - Absolutely! Stunning velvet sofas by the a big window facing the street, large and small tables with comfy chairs.

High speed Wi-Fi and plug sockets - Yes!

Food and drinks - Thumbs up! All day delicious breakfasts, salads and sandwiches.

4. Yurt Cafè E14 8DS

Ever wondered how it is to work from the inside of a Yurt? Well, stop wondering and head over to the Yurt Cafè, for a truly quirky experience, just a few minutes walk from Limehouse station. They also organize plenty of activities such as knitting, gardening and board games nights.

Quietness - Indeed

Comfortable seats - The place has a larger room with plenty of comfortable seats and a smaller room with a few tables for those looking for a “private office”

High speed Wi-Fi and plug sockets - Yes!

Food and drinks- Loved the homemade breakfasts and exquisite cakes. They also serve cocktails and beers if you’re looking to cut down the stress towards the end of the day.

5. Hackney Coffee Company E2 9ED

Stylewise, this place left us absolutely speechless. You walk inside this cute coffee shop thinking you probably won’t find any seats (might look small from the outside), but then you start exploring. Towards the back you can find a stunningly large and bright space with plenty of seats, high ceilings, beautiful plants falling from the ceiling, and stylish illustrations on the wall.

Quietness - Yep

Comfortable seats - Leather sofas and large green velvet armchairs all around. Is that enough?

High speed Wi-Fi and plug sockets - Yes!

Food and drinks- Top class coffee, beautiful cakes

6. Appestat N1 8EG

This cosy coffee shop, will make you feel like you’re working from your living room, and we loved that. They have a big window you can sit by, watching the busy Upper Street while enjoying a great selection of coffees and breakfasts.

Quietness - Definitely

Comfortable seats Yep, if you are a sofa-type just run to the back and secure your spot.

High speed Wi-Fi and plug sockets - Yes

Food and drinks- Top class poached eggs on rye bread and smashed avocado. Amazing coffee.

7. 39Steps Coffee Haus W1F 8DP

Relatively new place in the heart of Soho (which we are particularly fond of). It’s a good spot if you’re looking for a fairly quiet spot in hectic central London. Their coffee selection is absolutely fantastic and the staff is genuinely friendly and helpful, not that the others on this list don’t also have this going for them.

Quietness - Depending on days and times, maybe avoid lunch time

Comfortable seats - The place is quite small so you won’t easily find a seat on a busy day, but when you do, try the window seats facing Berwick St. and D’Arblay St., you won’t regret it.

High speed Wi-Fi and plug sockets - Yes

Food and drinks- Beautiful scrambled eggs and pancakes (the food presentation is spot on), make sure you’re real hungry, the portions are huge.
